What Is Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) And How Does It Work?

by | Oct 5, 2022

Addiction can be a challenging and isolating struggle, but it is important to remember that you are not alone. If you are seeking addiction treatment in Louisville, Kentucky, there is hope.

Medication-assisted treatment is one of the types of treatment available to those who have a problem with drug use. The use of this kind of treatment is becoming increasingly popular with the results being incredible.

Some people think that this is counterproductive, but they don’t know enough about it to make this judgment, which is why we’re going to be explaining what it is and how it works down below. Keep reading to find out more.

What Is Medication Assisted Treatment?

Medication-assisted treatment is where the use of drugs, in combination with psychological therapies, is used to treat someone who suffers from drug addiction.

At first glance, this might sound a little strange, but it actually yields results much better than those who try to cut it out cold turkey. It’s not an easy thing to do, but medication-assisted treatment makes it easier for the patient to cope without the drugs

It’s becoming a more common and more accepted method of treating those who have a drug use problem. Different things work for different people, so it’s just a case of working out what is best for each person.

How Does It Work?

Medication-assisted treatment works by using the drug of choice, or a close substitute if the drug is illegal in combination with therapies to lead to a sober life. The dose of the drug is gradually reduced as the patient starts to be able to cope with the lower dosage.

It is not a quick and simple process to undertake, and it can take a long time depending on how the patient reacts to the therapies and the lower doses. Eventually, it should get to a point where they can be taken off of the drug entirely and still function.

It might not happen right away, and the patient may still experience some withdrawal at first as there is no trace of the drug in their system, but this will pass. The lower doses will make it far easier to manage the withdrawal than it would have been if the patient had stopped entirely as their body may have even gone into shock.

Who Does It Help?

It’s proved effective in helping those who have a drug problem. Of course, it isn’t going to work for everyone, but it’s worth a try. It’s a safe and effective way of helping people get rid of drugs from their lives. It’s not the end of the battle by a long shot, but it’s a start and doesn’t cause them extreme pain or stress.
