Recognizing Signs and Symptoms of Klonopin Addiction

by | May 5, 2023

Addiction can be a challenging and isolating struggle, but it is important to remember that you are not alone. If you are seeking addiction treatment in Louisville, Kentucky, there is hope.

Klonopin, generic name Clonazepam, is a prescription medication that’s normally used to control or prevent seizures and to mitigate anxiety from panic attacks. It’s a sedative drug that works by slowing down messages in the brain and inducing feelings of relaxation and euphoria.

Klonopin belongs to a class of drugs known as benzodiazepines and is considered highly addictive. It is intended only for short-term use because of the increased possibility for tolerance and dependence, even if taken according to prescription.

Prolonged Klonopin use eventually leads to emotional, mental, and physical reliance on the drug to the point where an individual is unable to function without it.

Signs and Symptoms of Klonopin Addiction

The common symptoms of Klonopin abuse include:

  • Clumsiness and lack of coordination
  • Disorganized thinking
  • Restlessness and agitation

These symptoms can be subtle in the beginning, gradually increasing in intensity as the addiction takes hold. Once the individual is addicted, their personality and demeanor may change.

  • Becoming secretive about how they spend their time and days.
  • Unsuccessful attempts to cut back on their drug use.
  • Withdrawing from family and friends and ignoring activities they used to like.
  • Drug-seeking – The individual may begin asking for pills from their loved ones and friends. If they’re unable to get any, they may max out their bank accounts and credit cards purchasing Klonopin from various sources. This inevitably leads to financial problems.
  • Neglecting their personal hygiene, grooming, and appearance as all their waking thoughts are consumed with getting high or avoiding withdrawal symptoms.
  • Escalating problematic behavior such as mixing Klonopin pills with alcohol and other drugs to get high or driving under the influence.
